The Touch of the Master's Hand

Last night I had the privilege of attending a fireside, where the speaker was Elder Clifford Herbertson of the 3rd Quorum of Seventy. He spoke about hope and the atonement and the value that Christ's atonement and influence can bring to our lives. At the end of his talk he recited this poem.

’Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But held it up with a smile:
“What am I bidden, good folks,” he cried,
“Who’ll start the bidding for me?”
“A dollar, a dollar”; then, “Two!” “Only two?
Two dollars, and who’ll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
Going for three—” But no,
From the room, far back, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, “What am I bid for the old violin?”
And he held it up with the bow.
“A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two?
Two thousand! And who’ll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
And going, and gone!” said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
“We do not quite understand
What changed its worth.” Swift came the reply:
“The touch of a master’s hand.”
And many a man with life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A “mess of pottage,” a glass of wine,
A game—and he travels on.
He’s “going” once, and “going” twice,
He’s “going” and almost “gone.”
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought
By the touch of the Master’s hand.

I know that the atonement of Jesus Christ has had a profound effect in my life in the last two years or so as I've come back to church and tried to progress in the gospel and get my life back on track. His influence in my life certainly has changed my life for the better and the influence I feel is worth the struggle that sometimes comes from trying to live the gospel and keep the commandments.

A new blog...

So after listening to the inspiring messages of General Conference this weekend, one talk in particular stood out to me. Brother Randall L. Ridd, Second Counsellor in the Young Mens General Presidency spoke about the power of the internet. I need to spend less time online and the time I do spend online needs to be more productive and useful. In the 13th Article of Faith we learn that:

If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

I want to spend more time learning about good things and writing about them. Particularly those things of the spirit.

Feel free to comment and share the things I post.
